The Kerala Legislative Assembly witnessed a heated political confrontation on Tuesday over the issue of rising inflation. During the discussion on a suspension motion brought by the opposition, tensions flared as both sides clashed. Dissatisfied with the government’s response, the opposition staged a walkout from the assembly. Meanwhile, Chief Minister VD Satheesan announced plans to release a white paper on the state’s economic condition soon.

The discussions surrounding inflation, escalating fuel prices, and the cost of essential goods intensified the atmosphere in the assembly. Both the ruling party and the opposition exchanged accusations regarding each other’s policies and decisions. The opposition criticized the government’s handling of inflation, arguing that it has become a significant challenge for the common people. They alleged that despite the continuous rise in fuel prices, the government had not taken adequate measures to provide relief.

During the debate, the opposition highlighted that the increasing costs of petrol and diesel were affecting the prices of everyday commodities, thereby exerting additional financial pressure on the public. They demanded immediate and effective actions from the government. Opposition leaders pointed out that global conditions and international events were impacting the fuel market, leading to increased transportation costs, which in turn affected the prices of market goods. They advocated for a policy review at both the central and state levels, noting changes in fuel pricing mechanisms over the years that have contributed to the current situation.

Expressing their dissatisfaction with the government’s response, the opposition registered their protest through a walkout. They argued that the issue of inflation, which directly impacts people’s lives, required a more serious and comprehensive discussion. Accusations were made against the government for not showing sufficient urgency on this critical matter.

Responding to these concerns, Chief Minister VD Satheesan acknowledged the economic challenges posed by rising fuel prices and global circumstances. He noted that ongoing international tensions and instability in energy markets could continue to exert pressure in the future. While rejecting the opposition’s claim that the government was inactive, the Chief Minister assured that the state was closely monitoring the situation and implementing various measures. He announced the upcoming release of a detailed white paper on the state’s financial status, which would provide insights into revenue and economic challenges. Additionally, he indicated the government’s intention to consider tax relief on fuel while emphasizing ongoing efforts against hoarding and black-marketing to ensure the supply of essential goods.
